Australia is about to get even colder with forecasters warning of arctic winds, rain and snow on the way – here’s what it looks like in your city
- Cold mornings across Australia on Monday
- Tasmania, NSW and Victoria saw high winds
- Forecasters warn that the weather will worsen next week
Australia was battered by an intense cold front on Sunday, with heavy showers, variable winds and snow hitting the country this week – with worse on the horizon.
Gusts of 137 km/h were recorded in Tasmania on Monday morning, the strongest winds this year.
Similar winds were reported in several other states, including NSW and Victoria.
Rain also fell over parts of Victoria and Tasmania with a so-called ‘dashing explosion’ bringing severe weather warnings across the south east.
The high pressure system over the southeastern states is likely to drop temperatures throughout the week, promising cold mornings for Aussies in Victoria and parts of NSW.

It will bring snow to those areas of higher elevation – including the Alps, Perisher and regions of Tasmania.
On Monday morning, temperatures fluctuated between seven and eleven degrees in Hobart, Melbourne, Canberra and even Sydney.
Colder mornings and nights are expected to continue, accompanied by an increased risk of widespread frost in the southeast.
The icy phenomenon could even extend into the southern reaches of Queensland, forecasters warned.
Since this is just the beginning of winter, the mid to later part of next week will hold even colder temperatures.

Forecasters say a series of robust low-pressure systems are looming on the horizon for Aussies next week.
This could bring more wind, rain and snow to the Southeast.
‘There is a widespread chance of frost through NSW, Victoria, the ACT until Monday morning,’ Sky News meteorologist Bradlyn Oakes said, ‘a few areas of South Australia and Tasmania also freeze as far south as Queensland.’
“Be prepared for that almost every day this week,” she said.
“Thursday night into Friday, then we’ll see that snow begin to fall.”
Surfers, rock anglers and all boat users were also warned that gale force winds could bring ‘very heavy surf’ and large waves across the NSW coastline, including the coastal areas of Illawarra, Sydney and Hunter – namely Seal Rocks and Nelson Bay
