The cause and manner of his death are pending the results of an autopsy, which the coroner’s office says will take place Monday.

On Sunday, detectives were “investigating whether the device had self-detonated due to its age or other factors, whether the pin had been pulled or whether some other circumstance was involved,” deputies said.

According to ABC 7an unknown person pulled the pin in and it exploded.

Niedert’s two children, an 18-year-old girl and a 14-year-old boy, suffered shrapnel injuries and were transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Concerned about the possibility of other explosives, authorities then called the Porter County Bomb Squad to secure the area and investigate further.
