US Ryder Cup captain Zach Johnson refuses to rule out picking LIV Golfers for this team

US Ryder Cup captain Zach Johnson leaves the door ajar for LIV golfers to be picked for this year’s event in Rome, insisting ‘I’m not one to say never’, after for defector Brooks Koepka to win the PGA Championship.

Zach Johnson has declined to say if he would pick in-form LIV golfers like Brooks Koepka for his US Ryder Cup team this fall.

American defectors remain eligible if they can accumulate enough ranking points to be in the top six in the US Cup standings, or justify their performances for one of Johnson’s six selections.

The LIV political rage has made a saga of that tinderbox situation, but Koepka, who led the Masters after 54 holes and then won here from the same position, is in such fine form that he should be in the conversation.

But Johnson offers little encouragement to the likes of Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau, saying he has no plans to attend any LIV events and seems to suggest he hasn’t followed any broadcasts either.

“I think the luxury of being captain is that I continue to be relevant and predominant on the PGA Tour,” Johnson said Sunday.

“So for me to abandon that in a week where I could be there and go where the bulk of my players will be coming would be irresponsible and inappropriate.”

Asked to clarify if he would go to one of the LIV tournaments to keep a closer eye on progress, he added: “It hasn’t been discussed. I’m not one to never say never, but it hasn’t been discussed.

Johnson has indicated that it is too soon for such deliberations. That may turn heads with less than five months until the clash in Rome.
