Twelve people are hospitalized in Glasgow after a double-decker bus crashed into a railway bridge, losing its roof.

The First Bus double-decker bus was trapped under a railway bridge near the O2 headquarters on Cook Street at around 11:35am and its roof was cut off.

Police, fire and paramedics responded to the scene and Network Rail Scotland supported emergency teams.

The victims were taken to three different hospitals, while others were treated at the scene. It is understood that there are no life-threatening injuries.

Train services between Glasgow Central and Paisley Gilmour Street have been temporarily suspended until it is deemed safe to resume operations.

Ch Insp Elaine Tomlinson, from Police Scotland’s Greater Glasgow Division, said: ‘At around 11:35am on Sunday 21 May 2023, we received a report of a bus crashing onto a bridge in Cook Street, Glasgow.

‘Emergency services attended and 10 people were transferred to various hospitals to be treated.

‘Various road closures are still in force, with interruptions to some rail services.

“I would like to thank the public for their cooperation and ask that they continue to avoid the area while investigations are underway.”

The bus company First Bus confirmed that it was one of its own vehicles that was involved in the accident.
