The accident was reported at 5 a.m. local time this morning.
It is believed that the bus lost control of the road and plunged more than 50 meters into a canyon.
Police have confirmed that 23 people were killed while the injured were taken to a local hospital in Talara, 1,083 kilometers northwest of the capital Lima.
Peru has a high number of road deaths, with the World Health Organization recording 4,414 deaths on the country’s roads in 2020.
