The last thing any motorist wants is to have a car that constantly breaks down and costs an arm and a leg in repeated garage bills, especially with a cost of living crisis biting back.

Fortunately, we can tell you exclusively which brands you can trust.

A new report shared with This is Money has listed the brands that stand the test of time better than other manufacturers.

Vehicle extended warranty provider Warrantywise has given us the top 10 trusted brands based on data from over 130,000 cars, with East Asian manufacturers dominating.

Most Reliable Car Brands: Honda Tops the Charts with an Incredible Reliability Score of 96.8/100 on the Warrantywise Reliability Index

The top performing brands have been compiled into the Company Trustworthiness Index.

This ranks each car based on a combination of factors, including the cost to make the repairs, how often they encounter problems, and how many days it takes to repair them.

The data represents only cars that are out of their manufacturers’ warranties, which means that the minimum age for the sample is three years. The maximum age of the cars included in the analysis is 10 years.

Data collected from 131,000 policies between 2021 and 2022 has put Honda at the top of the charts with an incredible overall reliability score of 96.8/100.

“Honda’s strong reputation for being ultra-reliable seems unshakable, and as previous news updates show, the Honda Jazz was named the Most Reliable Used Car in this year’s Reliability Index,” said Warrantywise.

Japanese and Korean brands held 6 of the top 10 spots in the most trusted car brand rankings, according to warranty data.

And it’s the Japanese and Korean brands that continue to lead by example, taking the top five spots in reliability bets.

Toyota came a close second, scoring 91.2/100 overall, followed by Suzuki and Kia, with Hyundai rounding out the top five East Asia reliability acquisitions.

Surprisingly, Fiat, Citroën and Renault account for the sixth to eighth places, which could dispel preconceptions that these European brands don’t make the most reliable vehicles.

The two remaining places in the top 10 are secured by Mazda and Ford.

Lawrence Whittaker, CEO of Warrantywise, said: ‘As the cost of living continues to rise, it’s important to keep things like reliability in mind when choosing a used car to buy.

“By collecting and collating all of this data into an index like this, we can further help our customers with their purchases by providing them with information to try to help ease the burden as much as we can.

“Consumers keep their vehicles longer and we can offer them a warranty to help them avoid large lump sums when things go wrong.”

The Honda Jazz was named Most Trusted Pre-Owned by the extended warranty provider earlier this year. In fact, 9 of the top 10 cars are either Japanese or Korean made.

And earlier this year, the Warranytwise Reliability Index named it the most robust of all used cars, with an impressive overall rating of 93.7/100.

With an average repair cost in 2021 of just £424.31, Honda’s reputation for building reputable engines remains strong.

The Warrantywise Model Reliability Index placed the Mazda 2 in second place and the Toyota Auris in third place.

The Mazda MX-5 sits fourth, the Toyota Aygo fifth, the Kia Ceed and Rio sixth and seventh respectively, the Suzuki Alto eighth, the Hyundai i20 ninth.

It shows that Japanese and Korean brands also dominate at the model level.

The only non-East Asian car company to crack the top 10 was Peugeot, as its 107 city car ranked last in model order.

Mr Whittaker added: ‘It’s not surprising to see Honda topping the table, given how reliable their cars have proven time and time again, with our Confidibility Index results.

‘The reliability index is a great tool for us to assess the market and help our customers make the right choice when it comes to deciding which car to buy; especially now with the cost of parts and labor on the rise and people genuinely looking for the best options to meet their needs.’
