Three Good Samaritans raced to rescue a California Highway Patrol officer who was brutally beaten by a pedestrian on the side of a busy highway.

The moment was captured at about 5 p.m. last Friday by a bystander on their cell phone at the north Main Street entrance to Highway 5 in Santa Ana.

The CHP officer had been called to the area after receiving reports of a man yelling at drivers and trying to take down a highway sign.

He was about to let the man go with a warning when the pedestrian viciously attacked him, threw him to the ground and began beating him.

Three men run to the officer’s aid, including Everardo Navarro, who feared the assailant was about to grab the officer’s gun and begin firing.

Everardo Navarro, one of three men who rushed to fend off the attacker, told KTLA, “I would always do that for anyone.”

“Since I see the officer laying down, I’ve been worried about the guy grabbing the officer’s gun and shooting the officer,” Navarro said.

“That was my main concern and possibly the same for me. So at that point I had no choice.

‘We are all human. I would always do that for everyone.’

Footage from the brawl shows the CHP officer walking to his motorcycle when the deranged pedestrian tries to knock him to the ground without warning.

The cop and the man struggle before the pedestrian throws the cop to the ground and starts punching him with his fists.

CHP officer Anselmo Templado told KTLA that the situation could have gotten out of hand had three men not rushed to the aid of the CHP officer to snatch the thug from him.

“Many of these situations become dangerous in the blink of an eye,” Templado said.

Templado said it’s unusual to see people running to help law enforcement and was grateful to the men for that.

‘You don’t often see something like this. Usually it’s just people answering and watching, but I want to thank those three Good Samaritans for helping our officer,” he said.

“It could have ended very badly, but luckily for them no one was seriously injured and we got the subject under control.”

The suspect, now identified as Santa Ana resident Jaime Paniagua, 33, was taken into custody.

He faces multiple charges, including assault on a peace officer and resisting arrest. The CHP officer was taken to hospital and released without serious injuries.
