A Porsche driver narrowly cheated death – when a fence post smashed through his seat just an inch from his head in a crash on a country road.

The driver was a fraction of impaled by the fence post when the luxury Boxster sports car lost control before hitting the fence near the affluent village of Shirenewton, Monmouthshire.

Eyewitnesses at the scene saw a spiked fence post protrude through the windshield, above the steering wheel and between the driver’s headrest.

The lucky driver escaped with minor cuts and bruises after the wood panel missed him by inches — and a passenger was unharmed.

The accident happened on a country road on New Year’s Eve and no other vehicles were involved.

The well-to-do village was named in the top 50 poshest places to live in the UK. But the name of the Porsche driver has not been released.

An eyewitness, who wished to remain anonymous, said the outcome could have been much worse.

“On hitting the gate it broke free, passing through the driver’s door window, pushing through the driver’s headrest and through the rear window.”

He said the car – a Boxster 987 worth more than £50,000 – had serious damage to the driver’s side and rear.

“Luckily there was no other road user at the time,” he said.

“The driver took off with what appeared to be a small cut above his right ear and the passenger a small cut near his left ear.

“Both driver and passenger were very lucky. The driver was less than an inch away from being impaled through the head.”

Gwent police confirmed they were on the scene and are investigating.
