Twist in the story of the young man Nicole Kidman posed with at the Oscars as she stepped out with her ‘boyfriend’s son’ who had just had his Hollywood break – as he’s revealed to be related to a Nine star
Nicole Kidman offered up-and-coming Aussie actor Sam Rechner the opportunity of a lifetime by letting him walk the Oscars red carpet by her side on Sunday.
As the headlines wondered who this new mystery man on the Hollywood block was, Channel Nine newsreader Peter Overton stepped in to claim him.
The Sydney-based journalist, 56, who grew up alongside 55-year-old Kidman, revealed that 21-year-old Rechner is his cousin, reported The Sydney Morning Herald.
Annette, Overton’s sister and mother of Rechner, was best friends with Kidman in Longueville when they all attended Lane Cove Public School together.
“He auditioned online for the role, then he got a call back saying Steven Spielberg wanted to audition for him on Zoom,” Overton said of Rechner’s big break in The Fabelmans.

He continued, “It made such an impression on him that a few minutes later, during the same Zoom call, Spielberg came back on screen and told him he had the part.”
Uncle Overton went on to speak of his cousin, saying, “He is the humblest, most gracious young man you could hope to meet.
“He only really started acting after an injury and surgery meant that his rugby union ambitions would not come true.”

He added, “I know we’re biased, but he really deserves all the success. I just know great things are going to happen for him later on.”
Proving why she’s known as one of Hollywood’s friendliest stars, Kidman arrived at LA’s Dolby Theater with Sydney-born Rechner, who made his big-screen debut in Steven Spielberg’s semi-autobiographical film The Fabelmans.
Rechner plays Logan Hall, the high school bully, in the coming-of-age movie, which was nominated for Best Picture but lost to Everything Everywhere All at Once.

Kidman, whose official plus-one was her country music star husband Keith Urban, held hands with Rechner on the champagne carpet as curious reporters asked them about their unlikely friendship.
“This is Sam, my best friend’s son since we were four, and he’s in The Fabelmans,” Kidman told Canada News Center ETalk.
Speaking to Sunrise reporter Sonia Kruger at the awards, Kidman praised Rechner for earning “his way onto the Oscar carpet.”
Rechner also joked that he was the “double” of Kidman’s husband Urban, 55, who was also spotted on his wife’s arm during the posh ceremony.
