Desperate fight to save man ‘crushed by telescopic urinal’ in horrific accident on Shaftesbury Avenue in central London

A man has been seriously injured after being ‘caught’ and ‘crushed’ by a ‘telescopic’ public urinal near Trafalgar Square in central London.
Emergency services were called to the scene at 1.10pm at the junction of Shaftesbury Avenue and Charing Cross Road outside the Palace Theater in London’s Theater District following reports of an industrial accident involving a public urinal.
It is thought that hours later, emergency services are still fighting to free the man.
An air ambulance landed in Trafalgar Square as a large number of ambulances and fire engines arrived on the scene.
A crane is now on site in an effort by rescuers to lift the entire device out of the ground.
Telling Police, MailOnline said: ‘Police were called around 1:10pm on Friday 27th January about a seriously injured man in Cambridge Circus, W1.

The incident took place near The Palace Theater where Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is performed
The man allegedly suffered bruises while working on a “telescopic urinal” at the site.
‘LFB, LAS and London’s Air Ambulance are present. Cops assist with road closures.’
A spokesperson for the London Ambulance Service said: ‘We received a call today (27 January) at 1.05pm about reports of an incident on Shaftesbury Avenue, Charing Cross.
“We have sent a number of resources to the scene, including an ambulance crew, members of our Hazard Area Response Team (HART), members of our tactical response unit and a medic in a rapid response vehicle. We also sent the London Air Ambulance.
“The incident is still ongoing.”

London Fire Brigade told MailOnline: ‘Firefighters have been called to a person trapped on Charing Cross Road in central London.
“A man is trapped under a hydraulic urinal. Firefighters work alongside paramedics to effect rescue.
‘The brigade was called up at 1:05 p.m. Four fire trucks and about 25 firefighters from Soho, Euston and Dowgate fire stations are on scene.”
It is thought the man was working on a pop-up urinal that would rise from the pavement for those in London at night.
