Homeowners share interior trends they think are “aging badly” in the hilarious Reddit thread

Homeowners have shared the interior design trends they think are “aging badly” in a hilarious Reddit thread, including farmhouse-style lamps, sliding doors, and any kind of quote on the wall.

Thousands of people listed the “current aesthetic trends that they think will age badly,” while others said they felt “seen” by the idea that some of the trends in their home will one day date.

The first thing many agreed on in the wire were word signs.

One person said, “Anything that says live, laugh, love…or, honestly, any combination of those words” (stock image)

“Yes, we know you ‘eat’ in the kitchen,” one wrote.

Another said, “Anything that says live, laugh, love…or, frankly, any combination of those words.”

While a third said they “already think” the live, laugh, love moment is over.

“I feel like the highlight was Live Laugh Love moment like 2011 or something. That already feels dated to me,” wrote one woman.

Farmhouse style lighting

The second trend that some say could be dated soon is the trend for farmhouse-style lamps:

“Those totally overused ‘farmhouse’ light fixtures – you know, the ones where it’s just an empty square (or rectangular) frame around a bulb,” one person wrote.

Another went even further and called the “urban farm or whatever you call it trend.”

“Whole package includes: white exterior with black window frames, interior: white walls, white shaker cabinet doors, gray vinyl plank floors, rectangular light fixture around island, barn doors, fake reclaimed wood,” said one person.

‘As a variation on this, the cabinets are blue with yellowish highlights.’

Some said they can’t stand all-grey interiors, associating it with house fins and emphasizing it as a “dull” color (stock image)

All-gray interiors

Some said they couldn’t stand completely gray interiors.

“Flipper gray everything is so boring,” one wrote.

“I’m apathetic about gray paint, but I hate the fake gray floorboards,” another added.

But a third was quick to defend gray, writing, “Grey isn’t just a real estate trend. It’s huge in everything from web design to fashion because it’s easy on the eyes and works with just about any accent color you want. I don’t see the gray disappearing any time soon.’

Sliding barn doors

Included under the farmhouse bracket was the current fashion for sliding doors.

“Barn doors and farm sink unless the house is actually on a field/farm,” said one person.

Another added, “Those damn barn doors. Make a bag of it or leave it alone’.

Moroccan inspired tiles

Moroccan tiles are extremely popular right now, especially in bathrooms where it often pays to make a style statement.

Moroccan tiles everywhere. It fits in some homes, but is now placed everywhere. I don’t think it will age well, except in homes where it’s in tune with the rest of the architecture.”

Paint everything white

A quick and easy way to modernize somewhere, many people say, is to give it a lick of paint.

And no color is more popular than white in this regard.

“Painting everything old white is one such trend that goes out of date,” one wrote.

‘All. White. Everything,’ added another.

A third wrote: ‘Everything is a bit gray or white. That sh*t is going to provoke reactions like lime green tiles in a bath. People will call monochromatic houses psychiatric hospitals in 20 years’ time.

Blue cabinets with gold hardware

Others didn’t like the current trend for blue cabinets with gold hardware that is hugely popular in kitchens and bathrooms.

Blue cabinets. Also light blue at the top, dark blue at the bottom. They never get the right color,” one wrote.

“The tired blue cabinet/gold hardware fever for kitchens and bathrooms,” added another.

Brown granite countertops

Also in the kitchen are plenty of brown granite countertops like “something from my chain-smoking great-grandmother’s house.”

“Brown granite countertops with white appliances are the worst,” another added.

Fake hardwood floors

When it comes to flooring, many people currently opt for fake “quality” hardwood floors.

“Fake hardwood floors are becoming the avocado-shag carpet of our time,” one wrote.

Another added: ‘LVP flooring – sorry it doesn’t look like wood. Will be another dead giveaway of the era any time soon’.

Painted brick

Finally, many said they couldn’t stand painted brick.

“Painted brick, if you don’t want to look at it, plaster it, or if you want to see the outside line of the brick, wrap it,” one person wrote.

“Painting is a quick and ill-thought-out process of restoring masonry.”
