Dancing Lollipop Lady gets her very own superhero figure and comic drawn by a top Marvel artist

  • It was designed by Marvel artist Will Sliney to honor the UK’s ‘everyday heroes’

A dancing lollipop girl who enjoys a boogie has been given her very own action figure and comic, designed by a top Marvel artist.

Sandy Cox, 56, from Doncaster, West Yorkshire, who is known as ‘Mrs Lollipop’ at her school, was given her own action figure by Marvel artist Will Sliney as part of a celebration of ‘everyday heroes’.

She said, “The action figure is just amazing, it’s so cool. It’s like having a shrunken Madame Tussauds wax figure of myself.”

Marvel artist Will Sliney used advanced 3D printing technology to design the model and created the comic to show Ms. Cox doing her job.

In the comic, she is shown getting into action saying, “My name is Sandy and I’m one of many everyday action heroes.”

Mrs Cox was working as a dinner lady at Maltby Lilly Hall Academy, Rotherham, when the school’s original crossing guard fell ill.

But she stepped in and eventually took the job full-time, becoming known as ‘Mrs Lollipop’ by schoolchildren.

Ms. Cox, a mother of three, added her own touches and even plays music to have a ‘boogie’ with the school kids every Friday.

She added, “I was already working as a dinner lady in school and I thought, ‘That could be fun.’

‘It just grew from there, I got a permanent contract and I absolutely love it. I love the children and have made many friends with parents, grandparents and carers.’

Ms Cox is one of four local government ‘superheroes’ who have been given their own action figure as part of an initiative by Britain’s largest trade union, Unison.

The collectables were created for residential care worker Denise King, librarian Emma Braker and garbage collector Richard Brace.

Unison described the “superhero characters” as intended to raise awareness of the role council workers play in providing essential services.

Ms Cox adds: ‘I don’t think people are fully aware of all the valuable works councils. It’s like watching swans gliding along but ferociously paddling underneath to keep things moving.

“I really love my job and I’m very proud to do what I do. I am so passionate about road safety and I think there is a lack of understanding for a lot of younger people.

“There is no longer a focus on the green cross code, which is why we are so essential. And I’m not just helping the kids across the street. I also help the parents, the carers and the grandparents.’

According to Unison, around 1.3 million people work in local government across England and Wales.
