The news comes after a partner at a major international law firm set Twitter on fire in 2019 after warning ‘badly dressed apprentices’ against wearing brown shoes with a blue suit.

Speaking at the Thomson Reuters ‘Transforming Women’s Leadership Into Law’ conference at London’s Hilton Tower Bridge hotel last week, the anonymous city attorney told young men: ‘Don’t wear brown shoes with a blue suit ‘.

Legal affairs journalist Catherine Baksi attended the event and tweeted about the lawyer’s advice she was passing on to “badly dressed trainees”.

Ms Baksi said the comments were aimed at people from non-traditional backgrounds who might not be aware of the “unspoken rules of the dress code”.

They said: ‘The idea that brown shoes shouldn’t be worn with blue suits in the city is still prevalent in some industries and, generally speaking, it’s a bunch of nonsense.

“Okay, an electric blue suit with chocolate-hued loafers will make you look like you’re campaigning for Nigel Farage, but a midnight blue suit with chocolate-hued oxfords can look as sharp as any combination of grays and blacks.”
